The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cocconeiopsis kantsiensis (Giffen) Witkowski, Lange-Bertalot & Metzeltin.

Type locality: Habitat in aquis subsalsis lacunarum litoris borealis prope ostium fluvii Umkantzi in colonia provinciae Capensis Kidd's Beach dicta in Africa Meridionalis. ; (Giffen 1967: 269) Notes: "Typus: praeparatum No.197 in collectione GIFFEN, Fort Hare, provincia Capensis. lconotypus: figurae nostrae No. 65-67."
