The type species (lectotype) of the genus Callithamnion is Callithamnion corymbosum (Smith) Lyngbye.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Callithamnion granulatum (Ducluzeau) C.Agardh.

Adjective (Latin), spongy, porous, soft like a wet sponge (Stearn 1973).
