The type species (holotype) of the genus Sphacelaria is Sphacelaria reticulata Lyngbye.

Type locality: Firth of Forth, opposite Caroline Park (Scotland) (Draisma, Prud'homme van Reine & Kawai 2010: 322). Type: Richardson (s.n.); 4.ii.1819; growing on rocks near high water mark. BM (Draisma, Prud'homme van Reine & Kawai 2010: 322). Notes: GL, LD.

Adjective (Latin), with flowers borne in racemes.
