The type species (lectotype) of the genus Nitella is Nitella opaca (C.Agardh ex Bruzelius) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Nitella confervacea (Brébisson) A.Braun ex Leonhardi.

Nomenclatural note
This is a new name for Chara batrachosperma sensu Reichebach, 1830, non Nitella batrachosperma A.Braun 1847, nom. illeg., nec Nitella batrachosperma C. Agardh 1824. In Reichenbach (1830) there is a description on page 36 and a drawing on table DCCXCIV [794] with the number 1070. Later, in 1831, Reinchebach gave a somewhat extended description in "Fl. Germ. Excurs." {Thomas Gregor pers. comm.).
