Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Phycodrys is Phycodrys sinuosa (Goodenough & Woodward) Kützing.

Type locality: Bay of Plenty, Ranfurly Bank, North Island, New Zealand (37º33.2'S; 178º50.3'E) (Lin & Nelson 2010: 211). Holotype (Fig. 35a): A.N. Baker; 17 January 1979; dredged from 71-76 m depth. WELT A010403a (Lin & Nelson 2010: 211). Notes: Isotypes: WELT A010403b-A10403h.

Adjective (Latinised), named for Nancy Adams, New Zealand botanist.

Named for Nancy Adams (1926-2007), New Zealand botanist, botanical artist, and phycologist.
