The type species (holotype) of the genus Zostera is Zostera marina Linnaeus.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Halophila stipulacea (Forsskål) Ascherson

Type locality: ["à Suez sur la sable, la plante croissant au fond de la mer est verte et a la port d’un potamogeton"] (Ferrer-Gallego & Boisset 2015: 1035). Lectotype: MPU MPU007336 (Ferrer-Gallego & Boisset 2015: 1035, fig. 2).
