The type species (holotype) of the genus Sarcodiotheca is Sarcodiotheca furcata (Setchell & N.L.Gardner) Kylin.

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Medium to large species with cylindrical, rather brittle fronds, laterals tapering both basally & apically. Colour varies from straw yellow in summer when bleached to pale pink to deep red or reddish brown. Morphologically similar to Gracilaria bursa-pastoris but differing anatomically (filamentous medulla) & with zonate terasporangia & less obvious cystocarps.

Habitat
Lower intertidal pools to upper subtidal, mainly on small stones & shells; also marina pontoons. Probably introduced to the south coast of England.
