A relatively rare alga, from shallow (probably shaded) situations to deep water (Kraft & Womersley 1994: 370).
Type locality: Port Phillip Heads, Victoria, Australia (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 278). Lectotype: Wilson; LD, Herb. Agardh 25737 (Kraft & Womersley 1994: 370).
