Type locality: "Habite ... les mers de la Nouvelle-Hollande? Péron et Lesueur. Ma Collection." (Lamarck 1815: 240). Holotype: Péron & Lessueur; PC (Womersly & Johansen 1996: 323). Notes: Probably from Rottnest I. (or Shark Bay), Western Australia (Womersly & Johansen in Womersley 1996).

According to Ducker (1979a: 88-98), the name Amphiroa charoides has been misapplied to this species by Sonder (1848 [1846-1848]: 187) and Kützing (1858: 25, pl. 52: fig. 1)
