Taxonomic notes
Although Geesink (1973) concluded that the freshwater species formerly known as Bangia atropurpurea was identical to the marine entity B. fuscopurpurea, analysis of DNA sequences have shown that North American and European freshwater isolates are virtually identical but are quite different from marine isolates (Müller, et al., 1998; Müller, Gutell & Sheath, 1998; see also Wolcott & King, 1998). For this reason, a name for marine isolates, Bangia fuscopurpurea is reinstated here. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
B. fuscopurpurea is currently regarded as a synonym of B. atropurpurea, but see Müller et al., 2003 (Brodie et Irvine 2003: 96). Nelson (2007) describes a new monotypic genus, Bangiadulcis to accomodate the freshwater filamentous species found in Europe, North America, and Japan, previously known as Bangia atropurpurea. - (19 May 2009) - G.M. Guiry
According to Müller et al. (2003), there are several distinct entities of marine Bangia along the North American coastline and they consider that marine populations should continue to be recognized as B. fuscopurpurea until their complex relationships can be resolved. Lynch et al. (2008: 610) note that it is unlikely that B. fuscopurpurea is a single species with a cosmopolitan distribution. - (19 May 2009) - G.M. Guiry
Habitat note
Intertidal stones (Selivanova & Zhigadlova 2009). - (10 May 2010) - G.M. Guiry
