Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Amphiroa is Amphiroa tribulus (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Type locality: "Côtes du Portugal" [Portugal coasts] (Lamouroux 1816: 299). Holotype: unknown; CN unnumbered (Harvey, Woelkerling & Millar 2009: 268). Notes: Type illustrated in Harvey et al. (2013: fig. 4C). Collector: Palisot de Beauvois (INA).

Named for the French botanist Ambroise Marie François Joseph Palisot, Baron de Beauvois (1752-1820).
