Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota implexa (Desfontaines) J.V.Lamouroux

Type locality: Mediterranean coast of France (Silva & al. 1996: 591). Holotype: CN C7F67 (De Clerck 2003: 168). Notes: PC

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), divaricate, spreading at a wide angle (Stearn 1985).

Taylor (1945) cites his records as Dictyota divaricata Lamouroux, prox.

Distributional notes
South & Skelton (2003) note that Fijian records of Dictyota require a thorough revision comparable with that made for Indian Ocean species by de Clerck (1999).
