Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Acanthophora is Acanthophora thierryi J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Type locality: Brazil (de Jong, Hitipeuw & Prud'Homme van Reine 1999: 133). Neotype: LD 94/068.9765 (nº38011) (de Jong, Hitipeuw & Prud'Homme van Reine 1999: 131). Notes: Agardh's specimen, Chondria muscoides from Brazil, inscribed "Chondria muscoides Ag. ad oras Brasiliam & ex. mus. Paris dedit Desfontaines", deposited in small fragments at the herbarium of Lund is proposed as neotype by de Jong et al. (1999).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), resembling a moss (Neal 1993).

Taxonomic notes
According to Perrone et al. (2006: 37), several specimens identified as A. muscoides (from various locations) belong to A. spicifera or A. ramulosa. These specimens include the neotype selected by de Jong et al. (1999). See note for Chondria muscoides. Other observed herbarium samples should be assigned to A. dendroides or A. nayadiformis (Perrone et al., 2006: 39).

Distributional notes
The presence of this species in the Mediterranean requires confirmation (Garreta et al., in prep.).
