Publication date: Feb.-March 1830

Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota implexa (Desfontaines) J.V.Lamouroux

Basionym
Zonaria linearis C.Agardh

Type information
Syntype localities: Cádiz, Spain; "ad oras Americae" (Silva & al. 1996: 594). Type: LD? (De Clerck 2003: 183). Notes: De Clerck (2003) notes that the type material is in need of critical examination as the description by C. Agardh is based on European as well as American specimens and D. dichotoma var. intricata, of which Z. linearis is a synonym, does not occur along the American coasts according to Hörnig & Schnetter (1992a: 59).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), linear (Stearn 1985).

Heterotypic Synonym(s)
Dictyota linearis f. divaricata Kützing

Taxonomic notes
According to De Clerck (2003), the synonymy was proposed by Hörnig & Schnetter (1988: 287), but remains problematic as Z. linearis was originally described based on Mediterranean as well as Caribbean specimens. The latter would belong to D. pulchella. He suggests it may be a synonym of Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) Lamouroux var. intricata (C. Agardh) Greville.

General environment
This is a marine species.
