The type species (lectotype) of the genus Ceramium is Ceramium virgatum Roth.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Stirkia brasiliensis (A.B.Joly) Barros-Barreto & Maggs.

Type locality: Prainha, São Vicente, São Paulo State, Brazil; (Joly 1957: 148, 150) Holotype: A.B. Joly; 20 June/July(?) 1955; dense tufts epiphytic on Amphiroa or Arthrocardia; SPF?; Joly 24-1955 (Joly 1957: 148, 150) Notes: Joly (1957: 148, 150) notes that the type material (tetrasporangial, male and carposporangial) is located in the Herbário ficológico do Departamento de Botânica da Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras da Universidade de São Paulo. "Holotype. — Brazil. São Paulo State, Prainha, São Vicente, 20.VII.1955, Joly 24-1955 (holo-, BM[BM000562289])." (Barros-Barreto & al. 2023: 28).
