Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus pseudovillum (Hollenberg) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs.

Type Information
Type locality: Johnston Island: North Island; (Index Nominum Algarum) Holotype: R.S. Jones; April 22 1965; [Hollenberg 65-52] (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: Johnston Atoll, Central Pacific. Holotype: US 61232 (Díaz-Tapia, 2017). H. 65-52, tetrasporic, cystocarpic and spermatangial, growing on dead coral at a depth of 1-2 m and 20 m shoreward from the outer reef margin, north of North I., Johnston I. (Hollenberg, 1968).

Origin of Species Name
Noun (Latin), not like a species named villum.
