Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Leptophytum flavescens (Kjellman) Athanasiadis.

Type locality: Karlsø [now Karlsøy] (Tromsø amt [= Tromsø county]), Norway; (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 249) Notes: Type not designated (UPS?). Syntype: TRH B3-1772 (leg. Kjellman).
Origin of Species Name
Participle (Latin), yellowing; becoming yellow.
