The type species (lectotype) of the genus Thecadinium is Thecadinium petasatum Kofoid & Skogsberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Thecadinium yashimaense S.Yoshimatsu, S.Toriumi & J.D.Dodge.

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Cells broadly ovoid, laterally compressed, 38-54 microns long, 27-33 microns wide, 33-35 microns deep, ovoid in lateral view, ovoid to obovate in ventral view, containing numerous golden brown chloroplasts. Nucleus ovoid and situated in the central-dorsal part of the cell. Thecal plates thick, with numerous, evenly distributed pores; plate formula: P0 (NB: 0, subscript), 3', 1a, 6', 5c, ?s, 5'", 1p, 1"". Cingulum deeply excavated, displaced approximately half the cell length, beginning mid-ventrally and ascending to cross the upper third of the cell on the left and dorsal sides, descending on the right side and rejoining the sulcus in the lower third of the cell. Sulcus deeply excavated, bordered by thick sulcal lists on the adjoining 5'" and 1 p plate margins; SL(NB: L, subscript) plate with prominent list on the right plate margin.
