Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Macrocystis is Macrocystis pyrifera (Linnaeus) C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Egregia obtusa (Harvey) P.C.Silva ex S.C.Lindstrom.

Type Information
Type locality: "California" [USA]; (Harvey 1833: 163) Holotype (single gathering): BM; 00056873 Notes: Collection site was either Monterey or San Francisco.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), obtuse, blunt (Stearn 1973).
