Description
Algae are brown to orange in color when living, producing small overlapping crusts, 4-11 mm broad by 3-10 mm long; young crusts are produced vegetatively from parent crusts; crusts becoming completely calcified and possess dictinct radial lines; hypothallus with cells in flabellar arrangements; in radial section, hypothallial cells measure 34-48 microns in length and to 27. 5 microns in height; proximal perithallial cells measure 35-40 microns in length and 30-35 microns in height and are cut off from near the anterior end of the hypothallial cells at angles from 50 to 60º; proximal perithallial cells give rise to two ascending files of perithallial cells, perithallial cells measure 17-25 microns in breadth and 20-35 microns in height; hair mother cells are present occasionally in the perithallus distally; the crusts are 6-7 cells in height and measure 110-180 microns in thickness; simple unicellular spherical rhizoids are cut off from the anterior ends of the hypothallial cells; tetrasporangia in elevated nemathecia, cut off laterally from enlarged basal paraphysal cells, they are ovate and measure to 110 microns long by 45 microns wide; gametophytes monoecious; carposporangia are mostly in chains of three with mature carposporangia measuring to 45 microns long x 30 microns wide; spermatangia are produced in simple chains.
