Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cystodinium cornifax (A.J.Schilling) G.A.Klebs.
Type Information
Syntype localities: "Sie fanden sich im „Wilden See" bei Groß Besten (Hochmoor), sollen auch nach mündlicher Mitteilung in einem größeren See bei
Berlin in großer Zahl vorkommen." [Germany]; (Lindemann 1928: 291)
