The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Holotype locality: Masonboro Inlet south jetty, New Hanover Co., North Carolina, USA (34º10.949' N, 077º48. 836' W); (Stuercke & Freshwater 2010: 305) Holotype (fig. 13): D.F. Kapraun, D.W. Freshwate and B. Stuercke; 4 May 2005; growing on rock; MICH; [=WNC2010-016] (Stuercke & Freshwater 2010: 305) Notes: Holotype: three specimens (male, female and tetrasporophyte) mounted on sheet. Isotypes: MICH [= WNC2010-017] and WNC (WNC2010-018 to WNC2010-020); WNC2005-2081 to WNC2005-2092, sealed Karo slides.
