The type species (lectotype) of the genus Chrysymenia is Chrysymenia ventricosa (J.V.Lamouroux) J.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Rhabdonia coccinea (Harvey) Harvey.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), deep red, from scarlet to carmine and crimson (Stearn 1973).
