The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Amphidinium conradii J.Schiller.

Type locality: brackish water, near Nieuport, Belgium; (Index Nominum Algarum)

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), covered with a greyish bloom; blue-grey.
