Type locality: Europe; Japan; California; (Bornet & Flahault 1886: 353) Notes: Roth's original material was collected "in itinere botanico, cum optimo collega Mertens initio mensis Augusti 1802. per Holsatiam instituto, prope Neustadt in lapidibus aquae immersis, maris Baltici,...". [on a botanical journey with an excellent colleague Mertens beginning of August 1802. By Hosaltia institute, near Neustadt on the stones in water, the Baltic Sea,.." Roth's type was thus collected in the Baltic Sea at Neustadt, Germany]

Adjective (Latin), dull black (as opposed to niger, shining black); dark.
