Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gymnogongrus is Gymnogongrus griffithsiae (Turner) C.Martius.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Besa paradoxa (Suringar) M.S.Calderon & S.M.Boo.
Type Information
Type locality: One of Izu Seven Islands in Japan; (Masuda, Zhang & Xia 1994: 172) Holotype: L; 942.69.48 (Masuda, Zhang & Xia 1994: 172) Notes: According to Masuda (1987: 47), the Japanese name suggests that the locality was Hachijo Island. However, he did not find it at this location but did find it at Miyake. Japan: Tokyo Prefecture: Hachijo-jima, Izu-shoto (INA).
