The type species (holotype) of the genus Pyramimonas is Pyramimonas tetrarhynchus Schmarda.

Type Information
Type locality: Disko Bay, West Greenland (69°24'71" N, 53°51'24"W).; (Hardardóttir & al. 2014: 1484) Notes: "Holotype.
A clonal culture (strain PDSH1) has been deposited in
the Scandinavian Culture Collection of Algae and Protozoa
(SCCAP/reference number K-1858). A fixed sample of
strain PDSH1 in glutaraldehyde has been deposited at The
Natural History Museum of Denmark, with the reference
number C-A-92067."
