The type species (holotype) of the genus Sphacelaria is Sphacelaria cirrosa (Roth) C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Herpodiscus implicatus (Sauvageau) Draisma, Prud'homme & H.Kawai.
