The type species (holotype) of the genus Sphacelaria is Sphacelaria cirrosa (Roth) C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Herpodiscus implicatus (Sauvageau) Draisma, Prud'homme & H.Kawai.

Lectotype locality: Banks Peninsula, New Zealand; (Womersley 1987: 152) Lectotype: Raoul; PC; (Womersley 1987: 152) Notes: F. von Mueller (s.n.), Australia on Cystophora scalaris; Raoul (s.n.) New Zealand, on Cystophora (Blossevillea) retorta 1843 (PC: syntypes) (Draisma et al. 2010).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), entangled, entwined, interwoven, interlaced (Stearn 1973).
