The type species (holotype) of the genus Neurocaulon is Neurocaulon foliosum (Meneghini) Zanardini ex Kützing.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Kallymenia reniformis (Turner) J.Agardh.

Syntype localities: "Among the rejectamenta of the sea at Niton, Isle of Wight, Miss E. Everett; On the shore at Budleigh [Salterton, Devon] Mrs. Griffiths; Gathered in Cornwall by Mr. Rashleigh."; (Turner 1808-1809: 110) Lectotype: BM-K; Notes: The Budleigh Salterton specimen was chosen by J. Agardh as lectotype.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), kidney-shaped (Stearn 1973).
