Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Saccharina is Saccharina plana Stackhouse.

This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type Information
Type locality: Bering Island; Sitka; (Index Nominum Algarum) Lectotype: UPS; A-823620 (Starko et al. 2018: 162, fig. 4) Notes: Accordng to Setchell (1901: 122, 123), Areschoug does not give the type locality but inferred that it was either Bering Island or Sitka. Setchell's specimens came from the Island of Amaknak in Unalaska Bay. Lectotype designated by Starko & S.C. Lindstrom. They note that this specimen is one of two of this form collected by Kjellman on Bering Island between Aug. 14 and 19, 1879. They consider the other specimen in UPS (A823624) to be a syntype.
