Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus infestans (Harvey) Huisman.

Type Information
Type locality: King George Sound, Western Australia; (Silva & al. 1996: 542) Lectotype: W.H.Harvey; on Polyphysa peniculus; TCD; Harvey Trav. Set 22 (Womersley 2003: 189) Notes: Type from Princess Royal Harbour, King George Sound, W. Aust.; probable isotypes (Alg. Aust. Exsicc. 180B) in BM, MEL, 1006715, and AD, A18284 (Womersley, 2003: 189). According to Huisman (2018: 543) the Harvey specimen (Harvey Trav. Set 22) is a lectotype rather than a holotype.

Origin of Species Name
Participle (Latin), infesting, attacking (Stearn 1973).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
This is common in intertidal rock pools or where just covered at low tide on rock platforms on rough-water coasts, extending less frequently to coasts of moderate water movement. It grows on rock and on a variety of other larger algae such as Laurencia (Womersley 2003: 189).
