The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus forfex (Harvey) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs.

Lectotype locality: Rottnest Island, Western Australia; (Silva & al. 1996: 542) Holotype: Harvey; on Posidonia; TCD, Herb. Harvey; Trav. Set 186 (Womersley 2003: 202) Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Womersley (1979: 495). Isotype in BM (Womersley, 2003: 202). Lectotype: TCD 15353-4 (Díaz-Tapia et al., 2017: table 4).

This is a marine species.

Habitat
Epiphytic on Posidonia and some robust algae (Womersley 2003: 202).
