The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidium is Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Orthogonacladia madagascariense (Andriamampandry) G.H.Boo & Le Gall.
