The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gracilaria is Gracilaria compressa (C.Agardh) Greville.

Type Information
Type locality: Hakodate Bay, Hokkaido; (Yamamoto 1995: 211) Holotype: 14 September 1972; On shells and pebbles covered with sand in the sublittoral zone (1-3 m); HAK; (Yamamoto 1995: 211, 212) Notes: Holotype (spermatangial) and other specimens are deposited at the herbarium of Marine Botany, Faculty of Fisheries, Hokkaido University (HAK).
