The type species (holotype) of the genus Sphacelaria is Sphacelaria cirrosa (Roth) C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sphacelaria solitaria (Pringsheim) Kylin.
Type Information
Type locality: Helgoland, Germany; (Pringsheim 1874: 166) Notes: Neotype: HELG, with propagules (Isotypes of S. furcigera var. saxatilis Kuckuck), collected on 27 September 1893 by Kuckuck; Type locality: Oldehovenbrunnen, Heligoland (Keum et al. 2001: 270).
