The type species (holotype) of the genus Melobesia is Melobesia membranacea (Esper) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Carlskottsbergia antarctica (Hooker f. & Harvey) Athanasiadis.

Herrnite Island, Cape Horn ; the Falkland Islands, and Kerguelen's Land; encrusting shells, and the sterns of Algae, particularly of Ballia Brunonis."; (Harvey & Hooker 1847: 482) Lectotype: J.D. Hooker; BM; unnumbered (Wilks & Woelkerling 1995: 560) Notes: Lectotype locality: Hermite Island (Cape Horn). Designated by May & Woelkerling (1988: 68).
