Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota dichotoma var. intricata (C.Agardh) Greville.

Type Information
type locality: "ad Kosseir" (Quseir), Egypt; (Silva & al. 1996: 585) Lectotype: Schimper; L; 936.74-194 (De Clerck 2003: 161) Notes: The specimen chosen as lectotype, collected by Schimper at Quseir, conforms to the original description. Dictyota acuminata was often regarded as a synonym of D. fasciola (J. Agardh, 1882: 103; De Toni, 1895: 277) but the type specimen belongs to Dictyota dichotoma var. intricata.

Origin of Species Name
Participle A (Latin), acuminate, i.e. tapering gradually or abruptly from inwardly curved sides into a narrow point (Stearn 1973).
