Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota hauckiana Nizamuddin.

Type Information
Type locality: Malabar Hill, Bombay, India; (Silva & al. 1996: 593) Lectotype: Hauck (1884: pl.1): (De Clerck 2003: 162) Notes: De Clerck (2003) notes that no authentic material was found in L, which should contain the type specimens of Hauck. Therefore, the illustration by Hauck is chosen as a lectotype. Dictyota atomaria Hauck is a later homonym of D. atomaria (Woodward) Greville [=Taonia atomaria (Woodward) J. Agardh]. Nizamuddin (1975: 349) provided a substitute name D. hauckiana. According to Schnetter (cited in Silva et al., 1996: 594) the type specimen of D. atomaria Hauck contains a row of apical cells and should therefore not be regarded as Dictyota species. However, Schnetter (pers. comm.) pointed out that the material was not part of the original type collection.
