The type species (lectotype) of the genus Porphyra is Porphyra purpurea (Roth) C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Wildemania amplissima (Kjellman) Foslie.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), saturn-red, flame-scarlet; literally, ‘painted with red lead’ (Stearn 1973).
