The type species (holotype) of the genus Melobesia is Melobesia membranacea (Esper) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Hydrolithon boreale (Foslie) Y.M.Chamberlain.

Type Information
Lectotype locality: Roundstone, Co. Galway, Ireland; (Foslie 1905: 96) Lectotype: M.H. Foslie; 18 April 1899; “"sample a"” on Gigartina [Mastocarpus stellatus].; TRH; A15-884 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 125) Notes: Chamberlain (1994: 116) records selecting a lectotype in TRH. Syntypes from Sweden (Koster), Denmark (Nyköbing Mors), and Norway (Hvalöerne).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), mealy, covered with farina (flour-like, powdery covering) (Stearn 1973).
