The type species (lectotype) of the genus Delesseria is Delesseria sanguinea (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Plocamium cartilagineum (Linnaeus) P.S.Dixon.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), deep red, from scarlet to carmine and crimson (Stearn 1973).
