The type species (holotype) of the genus Polyphysa is Polyphysa australis Lamarck.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Acetabularia peniculus (R.Brown ex Turner) Solms-Laubach.

Type locality: "King George's Sound" [Western Australia]; (Turner 1811-1819: 77, 78) Type: Mr Brown [Robert Brown]; BM; Herb. Turner Notes: Womersley (1984: 297) gives the type locality as “Nouvelle-Hollande, sur une vénus” which is clearly incorrect.
