Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Oscillatoria is Oscillatoria princeps Vaucher ex Gomont.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Phormidium corium Gomont.

Type Information
Type locality: not specified; (Silva & al. 1996: 51) Notes: Type locality fide Drouet (1968: 125) (Silva et al., 1996). ["Ad saxa in rivulis turfosis, ut ad Ramshyttan Nericiae (INA)]. Silva et al. (1996: 51) note that Drouet (1968: 124-125) chose a specimen in L as the lectotype of this species and assigned it to Schizothrix rubella Gomont, which he stated was found in fresh water and on soil.
