The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidium is Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Type Information
Type locality: Near northern limit of Bahía San Francisco, Esmeraldas, Ecuador; (Dawson 1953: 63) Holotype: Taylor No. 34-489; Feb. 11, 1934; At a depth of 5.4 meters with corallinae; HAHF; Sheet 160 (Dawson 1953: 63) Notes: Type (cystocarpic and tetrasporic) dredged in 5.4 m of water with corallinae near the northeastern side of Ba. San Francisco (Taylor, 1945). According to Grusz & Freshwater (2014: 101) the holotype is now in MICH.
