Type locality: "Tasmania, Mr. Gunn"; (Hooker & Harvey 1847: 408) Lectotype (Georgetown; designated by Kraft 1978: 520): Mr. Gunn; BM; 001039609 (Kraft 1978: 520 (fig. 29A)) Notes: "Type: Iconotype, here designated: F.T.Kützing, Tab. phycol. 16(2): pl. 77c, d (1866)" (Kraft & Saunders 2017: 234); superfluous? The Gunn specimen appears to be the holotype.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), fleshy, succulent, soft but firm (Stearn 1973).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
The few in situ collections of this species have come from depths of 2-40 m off rocks, jetty pilings, tunicates and sponges (Kraft 1978: 520). Epilithic/epiphytic on seagrasses: currently two species may be confused (Kraft & Womersley 1994: 454).
