Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Amphidinium is Amphidinium operculatum Claparède & Lachmann.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gymnodinium cryophilum (G.J.Wedemayer, L.W.Wilcox, & L.E.Graham) Gert Hansen & Moestrup.

Type locality: "Lake George" pond in Southern Dane County, Wisconsin, U.S.A. (43Ý01.9’ N, 89Ý21.9’ W); Type: University of Wisconsin; cultures 1A through 1W
