This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota bartayresiana J.V.Lamouroux.

Syntype localities: "llab. in oceanis calidioribus, in atlantico ad St. Thomas, in pacifico ad insulas Amicorum." [St Thomas, Virgin Islands; Tonga]; (Agardh 1882: 93) Lectotype: LD; herb. alg. Agardh, 48931 (Yoshida 1998: 217) Notes: Lectotype locality: St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, Caribbean Sea; Lectotype: LD 48931. Lectotypification follows De Clerck & Coppejans (1997b: 415).

Origin of Species Name
Participle B (Latin), spreading, outspread, diverging from the axis at almost 90 degrees (Stearn 1973).
