Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Mesophyllum crassiusculum (Foslie) Lebednik.

Type locality: White's Point, San Pedro, Los Angeles County, California, U.S.A; (Dawson 1960: 11) Holotype: W. A. Setchell 1496a; Dec, 6, 1896; UC; 739410 (Yoshida 1998: 582) Notes: See note to Lithothamnion rugosum f. crassiuscula regarding the selection of a lectotype. Athanasiadis et al. (2004) note that there is a paratype in TRH.
