Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Euglena is Euglena viridis (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Phacus smulkowskianus (Zakryś) W.-H.Kusber.

Type locality: Poland: Swierczek near Szydlowiec; (Index Nominum Algarum) Lectotype: fig. 6 in Zakrys 1986: Epitype: fig. 1, d-f (cells in resin, for EM, from strain ACOI 1226), Warsaw (epitype) Herbarium of the Biology Faculty at the University of Warsaw; cells in resin, for EM (from strain ACOI 1226) (Karnkowska-Ishikawa et al. 2010: 179) Notes: Lukomska-Kowalczyk et al. (2020:1149) note that the epitypification statement published in Karnkowska-Ishikawa et al. 2010(p. 179) does not include the phrase "designated here". They designate the epitype: Karnkowska-Ishikawa et al. 2010, fig. 1e in their 2020 publication. GenBank DQ249881.
