Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Takayama pulchella (Larsen) M.F.Salas, Bolch & Hallegraeff.

Type locality: Tasman Sea: Hobsons Bay, Melbourne, Australia; (Faust & Gulledge 2002: 42) Holotype: (Faust & Gulledge 2002: 42)

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), beautiful and little (Stearn 1973).
